WHO WE ARE, & WHAT WE DO
STUDENT ARTS FOUNDATION is a 501(c)3 not for profit organization established to support the educational and artistic advancement of all students. We provide resourceful guidance and aid to students that are passionate about the arts, in hopes of developing their knowledge and creative talents to pursue higher education and career opportunities.
Our Vision
Arts for all
Rochester is widely recognized as a center for the arts in upstate New York, rich in visual and performing arts venues and organizations. Many offer a host of experiential learning opportunities for students of all ages. Too often, they are not readily accessible to everyone in our community. Programs frequently fail to reach a larger and diverse audience, and many students remain unaware of and unable to reasonably access extracurricular options available within their areas of interest.
Our Purpose
THE WHY BEHIND WHAT WE DO
The Student Arts Foundation (SAF) exists to advance equity in the arts by ensuring that all youth in Rochester, particularly those from under-resourced and historically underrepresented communities, can discover, pursue, and sustain their creative passions.
Many families face challenges such as limited income, lack of transportation, and little awareness of available opportunities, barriers that prevent young people from fully exploring their creative potential in a city known for its rich cultural assets.
According to the National Center for Education Statistics, 85% of U.S. public schools offer some level of art instruction, yet this access is not experienced equally. In Rochester, where about 40% of children live in poverty and nearly 60% of households are low-income, families often face barriers that prevent participation in the arts. Many are unaware of existing programs, cannot afford tuition or materials, or lack reliable transportation to cultural venues. This results in too many young people, especially Black, Latino, and other underrepresented youth, missing out on opportunities that could spark creativity, build confidence, and open pathways to future careers.

Our Support
How we help
The Student Arts Foundation’s Community Art Subsidy Program and Scholarships are at the heart of our efforts to remove financial and access barriers that prevent many Rochester youth from pursuing the arts. Through our Scholarship Program, we provide direct financial support to students seeking to deepen their artistic studies, whether through school programs, specialized training, or post-secondary opportunities.
Complementing this, our Community Art Subsidy Program offers flexible funding that covers partial or full costs for arts camps, classes, performances, and workshops provided by local cultural institutions. This support is especially critical for families from low-income households who may struggle to afford tuition, art supplies, or reliable transportation. By working closely with partners such as the Memorial Art Gallery, Hochstein Music & Dance, Flower City Arts Center, Geva Theatre Center, and ROCmusic Collaborative, SAF ensures that the awareness and excitement sparked during events like Arts Day can translate into real, sustained participation.
Through both financial assistance and mentorship, we create pathways for youth to access meaningful arts opportunities, develop their skills, and connect with future educational and career possibilities.
